The Stockholm Junior Water Prize (SJWP)
www.siwi.org
Young people play a vital role in finding innovative solutions to help tackle climate change.  The Stockholm Junior Water Prize (SJWP) is open to pre-university students aged between 15-20 years old.  Entrants compete with projects aimed at improving livelihoods and ecosystem health in the water environment.  Projects can look at any aspect of the water sector, focusing on important local, national or global topics.

Every year, young people from over 30 countries compete at national level with the winners going on to represent their country at the international SJWP, held in Stockholm during World Water Week.  Andrew Dunn represented the 2009 UK in Stockholm, where he won praise and an International Diploma for making a domestic flood defence barrier – ‘FloodDAM’.  “If I had to sum-up my experience of SJWP in one word it would be ‘amazing!”’ beams Dunn.  He was encouraged to create his inexpensive, recyclable, quick and easy to use design after many homes in his town were ruined by flooding back in 2000.

Previous winners of the SJWP have carried out projects on a diverse range of topics including raindrops being converted to electric energy, waste water being treated with eggshells and newspaper being used to help farmers save water.
The international Stockholm Junior Water Prize winner receives a USD 5,000 award and a prize sculpture, presented by HRH Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden.

Entry is now open to the 2010 SJWP and closes on 21st April 2010.

Mathematics in Education and Industry (MEI)
www.mei.org.uk
Mathematics in Education and Industry (MEI) is pleased to invite entries for a national competition for those of you currently on a Year in Industry (YINI) placement and your fellow employees in the company.
The competition is to produce a document of exemplar work which details mathematics that you have used during your placement and/or is used by your employer in the workplace. The purpose is to convey how school mathematics can be, and is, used in the context of ‘real-life’ problems and their applications. So the mathematical ideas you describe should be suitable for school and college aged students who are studying, or have studied, GCSE and A level Mathematics (it is also acceptable to include examples motivated by A level Further Mathematics course content).

A prize of £100 will be awarded for each winning exemplar; we anticipate that a minimum of two sets of suitable exemplars will be selected.

See http://www.mei.org.uk/examplars and go to the website www.mei.org.uk for full competition information.

Entries should be submitted by e-mail to Stephen.Lee@mei.org.uk no later than 31 May 2010.

Rotary International (RIBI) Young Citizen Awards 2010
www.ribi.org
The achievements of young people are being celebrated with the Rotary in Great Britain and Ireland (RIBI) Young Citizen Awards. Young Citizen is a project conceived by RIBI in association with BBC News to celebrate the positive citizenship and vital responsibilities assumed by many young people in these islands.

RIBI is again looking for nominations for the RIBI Young Citizen Awards. Launched in association with BBC News in 2007, the awards recognise young people (under the age of 25).
Five awards of a trophy, a cash prize of £500 and a visit to BBC News at TV Centre in London will be made to five Rotary related projects involving young people working in their communities to improve the lot of others. Especially attractive projects will be those involving young people helping young people. The awardees may be an individual or a group.

Work  Experience  Abroad  For  Students  Through  Rotary
www.ribi.org

Rotary is short for Rotary International – an organisation of business and professional men and women united worldwide, to provide humanitarian service, to encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and to help to build goodwill and peace in the world.

Each year, Rotary Youth Exchange provides thousands of young people with the opportunity to experience the cultures, problems and accomplishments of people in other countries.

One of our most popular student exchanges is our New Generation Exchange (NGE), which is aimed at the 18 to 25 year olds, which is, in effect, a chance of completing a works experience in another country.

The benefits of a NGE is it’s flexibility. The student chooses the length of time (3 weeks to 3 months) and the time of year they go. It costs the student their airfare; insurance; and pocket money. Everything else is organised by rotary. Present examples are a student starting a MSc in September wanting a placement in a company in NZ specialising in renewable energy and a student studying medicine at Oxford university looking for a placement an American hospital.

For further information about these life changing experiences please visit the rotary web site (www.ribi.org).

BOSCH Technology Horizons Award 2010
www.bosch.co.uk
Are you aged between 14 and 24?
Are you creative, innovative and have an interest in technology and engineering? Then you could enter the Bosch Technology Horizons Award 2010 for your chance to win up to £1,000. All you have to do is write an essay of 500 words (this applies to 14 to 18 year olds) or 750 words (this applies to 19 to 24 year olds) answering the question on the website below about technology and engineering. To find the question and for information on all the prizes, visit www.bosch.co.uk/technologyhorizons. Competition opens: 02.11.09. Closing date: 22.03.10. Terms and conditions apply.

Bosch is a leading manufacturer of quality technology products from dishwashers which save up to 45% water to boilers which are energy-efficient. Bosch products and technology are also found in almost every vehicle. The Start/Stop system, for example, is an innovation from Bosch which automatically switches off the engine when you stop in traffic and starts it again as soon as you want to drive off. This reduces fuel emissions, protects the environment and saves fuel. Engineers are essential for Bosch and that is why we are keen to encourage young people to discover an interest in engineering.

SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

Sponsorship is available but it might take quite a lot of your time and effort to be successful.  The earlier you start, the better!
Think about the type of companies you want to apply to:
• Research local employers and companies; try speculative approaches to companies who do not necessarily advertise sponsorship / internship schemes.  They employ the 'lie low' or 'wait and see' technique. They do not plan to sponsor students, but if a motivated and bright person contacts them, they may consider it.
• Companies will also want to know why they should sponsor you, remember as a YinI student you are  career focused, eager to earn and learn whilst possessing real work experience, a certificate from the Chartered Management Institute, Loughborough Maths course, Engineering Employers Federation awards.  Convince them that you possess the necessary abilities and skills that they require, ‘sell yourself’!
• Consult your prospective university – course administrators can tell you of any employers or schemes they know of that are interested in sponsoring the course they represent.

Check the application procedure:  Many companies have a standard application procedure and will often refuse to consider a CV and covering letter, so check the website!
Details of engineering sponsorships are published in Engineering Opportunities 2005 available from:
The Engineering Council, 246 High Holborn, London, WC1V 7EX Tel: 20 3206 0500
There are many books and publications that give possible sponsorship information.  Your local Careers Office or the Careers section of your local university library often hold copies for reference.
Examples of titles available include:
• The Educational Grants Directory Published by Directory of Social Change
• University Scholarships & Awards Brian Heap. Published by Trotman & Co. Ltd, 2 The Green, Richmond, Surrey TW9 1PL
• Sponsorship and Funding Directory Springboard. Published annually by Hobsons, Bateman Street, Cambridge CB2 1LZ
• Engineering Opportunities for Students and Graduates Published by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. Available free from The Schools Liaison Service, IMechE, Northgate Avenue, Bury St Edmonds, Suffolk IP32 6BN.
• Students' Money matters Gwenda Thomas. Published by Trotman & Co. Ltd, 2 The Green, Richmond, Surrey TW9 1PL
• Sponsorship & Donations Yearbook Published by Hollis
• The Which? Guide to Sponsorship in HE Alan Jamieson, London Consumers Association
• The Educational Grants Directory Sarah Harland & Dave Griffiths.

Hobsons, Trotmans and Gapwork also have websites and they are accessible via the CUED Industrial Experience website: www.eng.cam.ac.uk/admissions/gapyear/sponsorship.html
